Old farm machinery helps new 4-H Club learn about mechanics

The Rusty Bolts, a newly formed 4-H Club for youths interested in mechanics and farm equipment, started restoring the 1953 Ford model tractor in March. The club plans to finish the project soon in order to start work on another piece of antique farm machinery.

“This is our first project,” Club President George Stillwell Jr., 15, said. “The club has to discuss what to do with tractor after we fix it up, but we hope to sell it to somebody to pay for the next one.”

Stillwell, an Upper Freehold resident who attends Allentown High School, and Alex Byrnes, 15, anAllentown resident who attends Biotechnology High School, organized the club. They were members of the Clever Clovers, a 4-H Club for youths who want to learn more about small animals and livestock, when they realized they both had an interest in learning more about farm machinery. Byrnes, the club’s vice president, derived his interest from seeing tractor shows. Stillwell is a member of the FFA, which was founded as Future Farmers of America, who lives on a farm. His father, George Stillwell Sr., is an auto mechanic who also repairs farming equipment. Upper Freehold’s William Search, one of Stillwell’s father’s clients, donated the 1953 tractor to the club to get it started.

Besides Stillwell and Byrnes, the other Rusty Bolts are Alex Potosky, Erin Wikoff, Stillwell’s sister, Renee, and Byrnes’ brother, Nate. They meet twice each month at the Stillwell farm to work on the tractor.

“A lot of the kids in the club don’t really know the mechanical side of a tractor,” Stillwell said. “Those of us that do are teaching them how an engine works and how a tractor works, rather than just how to use it.”

Stillwell can foresee the club impacting the future of agriculture in New Jersey by keeping area youths interested in and knowledgeable about farming. He also said it’s great to see girls getting involved in the mechanical side of agriculture. His sister, Renee,13, who attends Stone Bridge Middle School, said she took interest in farm machinery after she and her brother started raising farm animals.

“My brother and I started raising animals and getting more into farming, and then it really interested me what I could do with an old tractor,” she said. “We all contribute to the restoration to learn better. A couple other kids and I have been painting and cleaning parts.
