Corbin Maxey, wildlife educator: The next Steve Irwin?

After a recent taping in which a capuchin became very shy, Maxey tried to make friends with a different monkey, Bella, held by owner Tracy Ross. Maxey appeared on the “The Today Show” in February. “I’m glad you found your calling in life. I wish my son would,” Today Show host Kathie Lee Gifford told Maxey as she held a baby alligator.

Most Boise State University students can’t say they’ve been guests on “The Tonight Show,” “The Martha Stewart Show” and “The Today Show.”

Corbin Maxey isn’t like most students.

The 21-year-old from Meridian — who is finishing his biology degree — has been a wildlife educator for about a decade. Though a busy college student, he brings animals to local schools and does a live “Creature Feature” segment on KIVI-TV (Channel 6) each Wednesday morning.

“Someday, I expect he will be the next Jack Hanna,” says his New York manager, Marta Tracy, who agreed to work with Maxey after seeing him on national TV in 2008.

“We met and discussed how I could help him build his TV and media presence over the long term, with the goal of having him become the host of his own TV series one day,” she says.[0x0b]

Hanna is the former director of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. He’s a wildlife educator who has had his own TV show and makes regular appearances on other national shows, including “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

Tracy is one of two managers working with Maxey. If he gets offered a television series or a product to promote, they will get a percentage of what he earns.

Maxey got into exotic animal rescue as a kid. A ball python was the first animal he took in. Before long, he was caring for more than 40 animals, including an alligator, a bearded dragon and a snapping turtle.

To raise money for their care, he started a home business called the Cyprus Hill Reptile Reserve. For a price, he’d do “critter parties,” teaching kids about the animals.

“By the time he was 12 years old, he had his own cellphone, his own business cards, and he was on his way,” says Jan Maxey, Corbin’s mother. “I knew it wasn’t just a hobby.”

Maxey eventually made enough money to pay for a Ford Explorer to transport the animals himself.

One of his childhood heroes was Steve Irwin, the Aussie conservationist known as the Crocodile Hunter. Irwin died in 2006 after a stingray plunged a barb into his chest as he snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef while filming a TV series.
