Farewell Stan Wallace

A mighty old gum tree has fallen and now it’s our time to pay tribute to Stan, born Stanley William Wallace on 22 October 1915 at his parent’s home on Arundel Road, Keilor.

His parents were Alexander and Mary Wallace and Stan was a brother to Dorothy, Jessie, John and Donald. Don is still alive at 91 years.

Stan was a much loved and respected son, brother, cousin, uncle, husband, father, father-in-law, Pa, great-grand Pa, friend and neighbour. He had a full life filled with family, friends and neighbours, the farm, footy, fun and food; he had a very healthy appetite.

He lived in Keilor all his life bar about three months or so when he did his basic army training at Seymour and Puckapunyal during WWII. Due to his aged parents being unable to continue farming Stan was not accepted to the Australian Imperial Force but was accepted for the Australian Military Force which stayed in Australia. Later he did an abbreviated fitter and turner’s course at RMIT and obtained work with Ansett at Essendon Aerodrome doing shift work and staying there for two to three years - work all related to the war effort. All the while he was living at his parents’ house and also managing time to work part time on his parents’ and uncle’s farm.

Stan attended Keilor State School, riding a pony named Darby to school along with his friends and neighbours, many of whom became life long friends. Later he was joined by his younger brother Don, who then rode Darby. Stan progressed to the big horse Jack. Interesting to note after Don finished school, Darby was loaned to the four Frewen children who in turn rode to Keilor State School. When they finished, Darby was handed back to the Wallace family and lived to the ripe old age of 35 years.

Stan was a whiz at English and maths, in those days known as arithmetic. He won a scholarship to Stotts Business College in the city, where he studied accounting, shorthand and typing. He could have had a successful business career in the city but due to the Depression during the 1930s and other factors he decided to make his living off the land, working for his parents and his Uncle Jim. In the end he did have a successful business career, owning his own business and later becoming partners in the business with his brother Don, employing workers and also going into business with his children.

Today his youngest son, David, is running the business that Stan commenced in 1946.
