Hooray For Earth: Cellphone [EP] – Music Review

Boston based Hooray for Earth’s newest record, “Cellphone EP” delivers not only a pretty sound musical package but successfully creates, carries out, and leaves an impression. Ranging from progressive rock sounding songs to more Weezer inspired ones, the EP’s tracks all seem to flow into each other and with each other.

Starting with the opening track “Cellphone”, they establish their sound from the start partly reminiscent of a 90′s sound along the lines of Porcupine Tree. Although quite a short track, “Cellphone” seems cut out to be a releasable single off of this EP with it’s vocals and rolling arpeggiating rhythm. As the tracks progress, we hear more playfulness in tracks such as “Ellie Mae” and “Warm Out” that have a revised retro sound created by the likes of muffled guitars, vocals and guitars aligned, and lyrics such as “hey friend be happy with me, spring time is slowly nearing”. After this softer build-up, the EP then seems to take on a heavier sound that makes the songs seem intensely self involved. More interesting features such as female background vocals on “Friend”  appear along with a late 80′s loop at the start of the same song. Although blending in well with the rest of the record, “Friend” seems like the one track on the EP that maybe had Hooray for Earth longing to sound more like what the indie world is twirling towards in recent months. The last listed track, “Videostore”, ends the EP with a song that has become, at this point, very familiar because it maintains the dark themes already explored by previous songs. The EP contains a very interesting bonus track that seems fitting as it would have probably broken the musical chain of events that Hooray for Earth had successfully managed to achieve.

A good set of tracks- had it been a full length it might have lost a lot of the conciseness that the EP possesses.
