China Experiences Rapid Franchise Expansion

Franchised businesses were only introduced in China in the early 1990’s and until recently individually-owned franchises were not the typical way of doing business. But with the continuing rise in the Chinese earning potential and the rapid growth of city populations due to urbanization, sales are up, especially at China’s fast food restaurants and franchising has suddenly seen a jump.

With all of that growth there has been an increased interest in expansion of U.S.-based franchises into China. Franchisors such as KFC, Subway, Pizza Hut, Starbucks and McDonald’s have been making their mark on the world’s fastest-growing market for several years with thousands of locations between them. And today, more companies are taking the leap into the Chinese market.

Just this summer, Right at Home International expanded in the Chinese market as the first U.S. in-home senior care franchise to move into the country. And Edible Arrangements signed a master franchise agreement for the development of stores throughout China. the first of which is expected to open in winter 2012 in Beijing with another 40 stores in the next five years.

Now, McDonald’s is saying that they plan to open one restaurant every day in a move to combat their fast food competitor in China: Yum! Brands, a company that has more than 3,700 restaurants (KFC and Pizza Hut) throughout the country. The move would add 700 McDonald’s locations to their current 1,300.

“We should be opening a restaurant every day in the next three to four years,” in China, Peter Rodwell, company president for Asia excluding Japan, Australia and New Zealand, said. “We’re now opening a restaurant every other day.”

In order to achieve such lofty goals, the company is going to rely heavily on franchising. The strategy makes sense for a fast food chain where 75% of their outlets are owned by franchisees, however only six McDonald’s are currently franchised in China. With this new push, the fast food giant expects 15 to 20% of their Chinese locations to be franchised over the next five to six years.

The world’s largest restaurant chain also plans on recruiting 50,000 employees in China this year alone in a move that mimics that same strategy from earlier this year in the U.S .

Subway also has plans to grow rapidly across China with 80 new outlets proposed this year alone and continued growth throughout 2015. “By the end of this year, we expect to have more than 90 stores in Beijing and nearly 300 in China,” said Alexander Moody-Stuart, Subway franchise’s general agent in Beijing. “By 2015 there will be 180 stores in Beijing and well over 600 stores in China.
