LB: Did you have any female role models / mentors while growing up?

CG: My mother. She’s Chinese, and phenomenal — always worked, instilled her own work ethic in me and my three sisters (‘Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother’ totally resonated!), and together with my father, played a very large part in making us who we all are today.

LB: Who has influenced you most?

CG: In the first instance, my parents. In the second instance, the many great bosses I’ve had over the years — with a special shout-out to Dave Trott, the then creative director of ad agency Gold Greenlees Trott, where I worked in the late 1980s, and to John Bartle, Nigel Bogle and John Hegarty of ad agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty, where I spent 16 amazing years.

LB: What key personal characteristics do you see in yourself that you’ve found especially critical in achieving success?

CG: I’m extremely action-oriented. As far as I’m concerned, there is way too much talking in this world and too little doing. I am all about doing. I believe in making shit happen.

I also believe that the only person who can make things happen for you is you. At the end of the day, it’s not about networking, contacts, connections. It’s about you, and your determination to make what you want to happen, happen.

Every obstacle I encounter, every person who tells me what I’m doing will never work, just makes me all the more determined to succeed. My biggest motivating dynamic can best be characterized as — forgive the expletive — ‘I’m going to fucking well show you.’ I wholeheartedly subscribe to the saying, ‘Those people who say it can’t be done, should get out of the way of those people doing it.’

LB: What, if any, distinct traits have you seen fellow female coworkers bring to the workplace? Do you yourself exhibit them?

CG: Women work differently than men. Women tend to be more focused on collaboration and consensus (versus the male tendency to want to ‘win’) — while still being utterly business-minded. I remember, years ago in advertising, we had a tough and highly unpleasant situation to thrash out. The team from both sides that met to do that accidentally ended up being all-female. It was one of the best meetings I had on that business. We not only sorted it out, but worked quickly and easily. For that reason, I would love to see much more valuation and appreciation of how women do business.

I really enjoyed this and the cross-referenced Taco Seasoning post too! My husband has been really good about flowers our whole relationship and recently picked up on tasteful jewelry (not the sleeping around kind), but the cooking hits home! He always says he loves to cook. Well, I could take it or leave it, but I hate when he cooks – EVERY SINGLE POT, PAN, DISH, and UTENSIL is used and in the sink! We do “I cook, you clean up” system and I end up spending about an hour on clean up plus adding “scrub kitchen floor” to my list of things to do! I also try my hardest to keep him out of the food store! When he was in school and I was the sole provider, he used to blow our budget on things he wanted when I’d send him for a few things. Or, I’d go shopping (having asked him what he wanted) and then he’d go out and get what he wanted. I finally had to explain that I alot about $400 (max) per month for groceries. If I go buy $100 one week and he goes behind me and buys another $50, we’re screwed! Five years into our marriage, I’ve relaxed a bit but also gotten better at keeping him out of the food store and out of the kitchen! Thanks for the entertainment!
