Carson Forest to place all districts under Stage 1 restrictions

DeLucas said changes to the restrictions must still be approved by attorneys, but Stage 1 restrictions may take effect Friday (July 29) or Monday (Aug. 1). The Camino Real Ranger District, which remained closed after other districts opened, will also be placed under Stage 1 restrictions. Stage 1 restrictions prohibit smoking except in enclosed vehicles and buildings, starting fires outside of grills or grates provided at developed recreation sites, or using chainsaws between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Pressurized gas stoves and camp stoves are allowed. Parts of the Carson National Forest reopened last week, with the Camino Real Ranger District remaining closed due to its proximity to the Santa Fe National Forest, which was still under Stage 3 closures as of press time. The Carson National Forest was closed most of this month due to dry conditions and the threat of wildfires. He said parts of the Pecos have received more rain than other areas, and the Forest Service should know soon which areas may be reopened and possibly placed under Stage 1 or Stage 2 restrictions. According to information from the Forest Service, Stage 2 restrictions prohibit smoking outside, using campfires or wood or charcoal- burning stoves or grills, using chainsaws or other combustion- engine-powered equipment between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., or using motor vehicles off-road. The Forest Service anticipated having the Arroyo Fire 100 percent contained a day or two after it started. In the wake of the 156,593-acre Las Conchas Wildfire near Los Alamos, concerns have turned to flooding and potential contamination. According to information from the Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL), additional protective measures to control floods and erosion have been installed in order to "reduce the environmental effects of any flash floods" following the fire. U.S. House Rep. Ben Ray Luján (DNM) has also called for more resources for an Emergency Watershed Protection Program to "strengthen watersheds affected by the combination of fire damage, high temperatures and lack of rainfall" and help communities recover from the effects of wildfires. Food Face-Off Friday: Grills | 1 cup awesome

Happy Friday! Waking up in the morning knowing that it’s Friday is such a great feeling! Do you think that Friday’s are better as an adult or as a kid? We think they were better as a kid. As an adult it usually just means the end of the work week. But as kid it meant pizza for lunch, TGIF , maybe a high school football game, or spending the night at a friend’s house. So many great memories!

This weekend is more than just “the end of the work week” for us though. Tonight, Dave has his 10-year high school reunion. On Saturday, we are going to The Sweet Corn Festival in Adel . If you live in Central Iowa and have not been to the Sweet Corn Festival, you should really try to make it out. There is a parade (which Dave will be in ), lots of activities for kids, entertainment, and oh yeah… 7 TONS OF FREE SWEET CORN!!!  After that we are headed out to a friend’s/co-worker’s house for a “Meat-a-Palooza.” Basically, we all bring some drinks, a side dish and whatever meat we want to have grilled. It will be a grand ol’ time!

Today we are going to compare grills, and we are going to tell you right away that the winner is the  Char-Broil Infrared Grill :

This Summer, Dave has been able to cook on standard gas, charcoal, and infrared grills. Without any doubt at all, the infrared grill is the one he would choose to cook on every single time.

The Char-Broil Infrared Grill is still a gas grill that uses flames to get the cooking process started. Placed between the flames and cooking grates are infrared surfaces. These surfaces get really, really hot (700°), so as soon as your food touches the grill it sears and locks in all the juices and flavor. This is what allows you to get the perfect grill marks like we talked about yesterday, without your food getting burnt to a crisp.

So for today’s Face-Off, we are going to compare charcoal grills, gas grills and infrared grills. To compare them we going to look at heat intensity (the key to grilling), heat distribution, temperature range, ease of use, and price.
