High-tech service gives instant bus, train arrival times

Valley transit riders can now more closely pinpoint the arrival time of their next bus or train thanks to a phone, texting and online service that is now live.

Valley Metro’s NextRide addresses a common problem that riders face when they go to a stop and wait: Did they miss a bus or train that left early, is it running late, or is it a no-show? When is the next one due?

NextRide takes away the guesswork because it allows passengers to enter via phone, texting or online a unique five-digit code for their stop. Within seconds, they are told when the next vehicle will arrive, based on a satellite-linked GPS system tracking each vehicle. They also are given the route’s next two scheduled arrival times.

The codes are available online and on signs being installed at transit stops over the next six months. The first of the nearly 7,500 white signs, which are the size and shape of a license plate, went up near the Phoenix Zoo on Thursday. Years in the making, NextRide is designed to reduce the thousands of hours a month that Valley Metro service representatives spend fielding telephone complaints from riders over missed or late buses and trains.

Transit planners hope that adding predictability to transit runs will attract and keep passengers who choose to leave their cars at home and board a bus or train. It’s hard to quantify the ridership benefits of such a service, but for years passenger surveys across the country have found that people shy away from mass transit if they consider it unreliable.

Currently, about 80 percent of the more than 10,000 daily calls to Valley Metro’s voice-operated customer-service line are from people wanting to know when their next bus is coming or needing help with the agency’s phone or online trip planner, said Scott Wisner, customer-service manager at the Regional Public Transportation Authority, which coordinates Valley Metro.

Sometimes, buses or trains break down or get delayed. Other times, passengers misread or don’t check the schedule.

Street noise and mumbled or accented speech can cause troubles with the voice-recognition software. And because the prompts ask for an exact location or landmark and many intersections have multiple bus stops, the software gets easily confused.

The result: Nearly half of the calls end up going to customer-service representatives, of whom there are only 40. Passengers are left fuming at long holds and the uncertainty of when a bus or train will come.

But already other counties are interested in linking to SunRail, including Flagler and now Lake counties. As Fish noted, existing tracks in Tavares could enable the MPO to create what will be called the Orange Blossom Express, a train that would run alongside Orange Blossom Trial/County Road 441 from Lake into Orange counties and bring residents to SunRail. At the other end of the county, in South Lake County around Four Corners, the MPO is looking at something different: expanded bus service. There is already a Lynx bus route that goes along the U.S. 192 tourism corridor into Lake County on U.S. 27, to the Wal-Mart across the street from the Cagan Crossing complex. It’s a fast-growing area becoming more heavily populated every year.
