The two highest-rated cable television shows these days feature top-cop chicks played by Kyra Sedgwick and Angie Harmon. So the genre is not new — except in Gloucester.

In the past 100 years, there have been four female police officers, including Auld, on the Gloucester Police Department. At present, Auld is one of three women among the 56-person force, and is the highest ranking female officer to date.

But the fem-cop thing is not high on Auld's mind, except perhaps in everyday ways.

"Now that I'm in plainclothes," said the lieutenant, who was promoted from uniform to her new post in January, "I have to keep my gun in my pocketbook. It's a pain."

Auld, 58, is blunt, funny and chatty. She says she doesn't watch TV ("except for the Sox") but is physically a kin-sister to U.S. Marshal Mary Shannon ("In Plain Sight"). She steers clear of cop-shop jargon.

But at nearly 6 feet tall, with well-tended nails and wavy blond hair halfway down her back, Auld is a striking figure.

She once cornered a suspected burglar hiding behind a door in an office, and, with gun drawn, "whammed" open the door so hard, the guy "went down right away," she says. "It probably worked better than the gun."

She said she has never fired her weapon in the line of duty, but has drawn it many times. She says she's an OK shot — although not nearly so good as her husband, Sgt. Bill Leanos, who is the department's weapons expert.

Auld grew up in Saugus, and, by a mean trick of fate, came to Gloucester in 1972 after a headcase cop — disgruntled because he had to work nights while firefighters purportedly slept — became an arsonist. He burned Auld's father's milling business to the ground, she said, and her father relocated to Gloucester.
