Jimmy Buffett first recorded songs in the 70s with Barnaby Records. His first album was titled “Down to Earth” and his second one was titled “High Cumberland Jubilee”. Since this was the early years of Buffett, his songs had a different approach to music than what it took on in the albums he later recorded.
In these recordings, Buffet strummed an acoustic guitar and his music made only slight references to drugs and alcohol, unlike his later recordings. The lyrics revolved more around social consciousness instead of around drinking alcohol while lying in the sun on some exotic Island or beautiful beach. His newer songs are about the freedom to enjoy life combined with a touch of remote humor, but his earlier recordings took on a more serious side.
However, in his second album, Buffett seemed to get more musically ambitious and some of these songs included the touch of humor that soon played a role in his popularity with music lovers everywhere. It was some of these songs that really soared him to higher fame.

Jimmy Buffett’s style of music took on a unique perspective that made him famous and you can still hear many of his songs played on radio stations today. Some of his later work includes the famous “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise”. “Come Monday” is another of his latest hit songs that reflects some of the seriousness that his early days portrayed.
What makes the top 10 songs listed above so interesting is that these particular songs capture Buffett in his early years before his style of music became so light-hearted, making them a valuable collection for music lovers everywhere. They represent Buffet as the 60′s/70′s singer and songwriter that actually began his long and renowned career.
Some of these songs were written with a special meaning in mind. For example, “Ellis Dee” touches the “spirit of the underground drug culture” while “Rockefeller Square” doubled as a protest song for Bob Dylan-esque and “The Captain and the Kid” is a beautiful acoustic ballad.
