Alienware M11x R3
The first version of the Alienware m11x showed up two springs ago, and while we liked that machine well enough, for two generations, we've been waiting for the M11x to truly arrive . Finally, it has .
Both prior iterations of this gaming ultraportable (something of an oxymoron, truth be told) left us wanting more. First, it was missing auto-switching graphics in the form of Nvidia's Optimus technology, which came out just as the original M11x was making its debut. (At the time, Dell chose not to include it.) The second version of the machine, the M11x R2 , did include auto-switching graphics, but it dropped the ball on performance and battery life. Only now has the M11x R3 finally struck the right balance of performance and battery life for a system of its small, unique stature.
The Alienware M11x R3 doesn’t break any new ground in terms of design, but the improvements it makes over its predecessor are big where it counts: inside. Last year’s M11x R2 used a first-generation Core i7 processor, while the model we tested this time came with a second-gen ("Sandy Bridge") Core i5 chip, which actually helped it outperform its more expensive older brother across the board. It also delivered, shockingly, twice the battery life as the M11x R2.
Our review unit cost a cool $1,099 when we wrote this in mid-August 2011, but you can configure your own model to your budget. You get a choice of three processors and various hard drives, graphics chips, and wireless options. Prices start at $699 for a base model.
DesignOn the outside, the M11x R3 is indistinguishable from the M11x R2. Both sport Alienware’s Stealth Black Soft Touch finish, which is smudge-resistant and has a rubber-like feel. Both also have the same sports-car aesthetic and a backlit alien-head badge. (If black's not your thing, a Nebula Red design, with the same Soft Touch finish, is also an option.)
The lid is supported by a heavy-duty hinge mechanism that gives the M11x R3 a solid feel. The 4.4-pound chassis is heavier than most ultraportables, however. Compare these competing machines: The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E220s weighs just 3.2 pounds, and the Toshiba Portégé R830 weighs 3.3 pounds. Likewise, at 1.3 inches thick, the M11x R3 is bulkier than the average ultraportable, especially compared with uber-slim models such as the latest Apple MacBook Air (0.68 inch) and the Samsung Series 9-900X3A (0.64 inch). And despite having room for an optical drive, the M11x R3 does not come with one.

The video outputs are HDMI and DisplayPort connections, and there's also an Ethernet port and a flash-card reader (for MultiMediaCard, SD, Memory Stick, and Memory Stick Pro media). The only thing missing is an eSATA port for connecting to external

There are at least two USB ports on this thing, likely 2.0 but possibly 3.0, as well as a memory card reader that works with SD, MMC, and Memory Stick cards. It's clearly geared for entertainment (one of the things we actually suggested they do with an

Kingston has become the latest company, along with USRobotics and Lexar, to release a new USB 3.0 memory card reader. The new card reader transfers data from CF, SD, micro SD, and Memory Stick formats.

Team TR11A1 is a single slot card reader with a USB 2.0 interface, and is downward compatible with the USB 1.1 standard. It allows direct reading and writing of mainstream memory card formats such as Micro SD (SDHC)/Trans Flash with plug and play

Standard SD and SDHC cards look identical in size and shape, only SDHC-compatible products will be able to accept the new SDHC cards. SanDisk differentiates its new cards with the new SDHC logo on the card and retail package.
Now my web research finds that at the time of its release Wes Brewer, vice president of consumer product marketing at SanDisk, said, “In order to provide the easiest and most compatible solution for 4GB and larger capacity SDHC cards in the market, SanDisk chose to bundle its new MicroMate USB 2.0 SD/SDHC compatible card reader, which normally retails for $19.99, with this new card.”
Note this deal does not include a reader.
In my case the device I bought it for can read it. Without the dedicated reader my year old HP computer cannot .
This is a must for loading music to listen to on my Palm TX. But BEWARE of eek Technoligies and buying at this price. They wanted $13.20 for shipping a 2 oz memory card? Buy from someone else even if it is a few dollars more and pay reasonable shipping rates. Don’t be fooled by their cheap price they make it up 2x in shippoing charges. When I saw it I cancelled my order..
I played around with the prices on this and found out several things. If I order this item, $11 in shipping costs is added by the third party supplier! If I get the 2G version, even two of them, those qualify for free shipping from Amazon and come out much cheaper. So check your prices on these before ordering.
