OPINION: In the middle class we aspire to be the same

Questions of taste, issues of design, the very term lifestyle – it's hard to give a toss when you're on the bones of your arse. Unless, that is, you're one of those rare birds who makes poverty work for you, deprivation tapping into creative depths. As for the loaded, they don't overthink it. They don't need to. If family money lines your pockets then you were probably imbibing complementary colours, a sense of proportion, with your mother's milk. But to be middle class is to have aspirations. A desire to look the part. To be on-trend. Abreast of fashion. To be middle class is to have choices. Try though we may to break the mould, something about being middle class renders us middle-market. Spot one well-turned out yummy mummy on the school run, and you've seen them all.
