Printup helping Watkins Glen experience only get better

It may be an almost three hour drive from Buffalo’s Southtowns to Watkins Glen International, but raceway president Michael Printup is doing all he can to make the trip worthwhile for those from his hometown region of Western New York.

Since being named to that position in June 2009, the Hamburg native has overseen the start to a multi-million dollar capital improvement project at the already premier track and facility.

Work has begun on upgrading and improving bleachers and camping areas, in addition to some paving on the road course, one of only two used on the NASCAR Sprint Series circuit. Printup also lauded the completion of the Royal Crown Club, which rebuilt the old in-track club burned down in 1997.

Already host to the only NASCAR event in New York State, along with a plethora of track-related and non-race events during the season, the Glen has furthered its reputation as a successful venue in a time when racing has hit somewhat of a skid with the downturn of the economy.

“We reviewed the master plan when I got here and decided to blow it up and start from scratch,” said Printup, who moved to Watkins Glen from his prior position within International Speedway Corporation as the senior director of facility management at Michigan International Speedway. “There were some immediate short-term goals...Our main goal is to get us up to what we’re expected to be and better.”

The project to further improve the raceway and increase its amenities has been taken on without the raising of ticket prices. In fact, in his three seasons at The Glen, Printup has helped increase The Glen’s span of stability in pricing to six years.

“A lot of attention is required at a track,” Printup said. “It’s like making upgrades to your house. You’ve got to paint, but your mortgage isn’t going to go down because you do it...When you can make it affordable, you’ve accomplished one of your biggest goals.”

The appeal of Watkins Glen has certainly attracted the Buffalo Region, which is a market that has assisted in its growth of nearly nine percent in attendance from 2009 to 2010 and a TV rating that has maintained despite deceases at most raceways.

“We’re lucky with all of the fans that we have and that we’re able to do real well in Western New York and places like the Southtowns,” said Printup, a Hamburg High School graduate who earned a bachelor’s degree from Fredonia State College.

The Merrill Dubrow Blog » Blog Archive » Time For Some Fun Friday ...

A few weeks ago I took a trip with the kids and bought a card game. The game was ‘Presidential Trivia’ and we had a fun time playing together. Some of the questions were very interesting and I thought today we would have a fun quiz about our presidents. This quiz includes some questions I took from the card game as well as others I got from my own research. As usual no need to try and Google the answers or ask your friends. The quiz will be timed. Time to play and see how many you get right.

Good luck to all and happy Friday!
