Classics on course for big auction year

In advance of its flagship event, the Auburn Auction Park has undergone an extensive renovation that includes 250,000 square feet of parking lot repaving, 3,000 gallons of fresh paint and a new roof on the grounds’ arena, chief organizers announced Tuesday.

Auctions America chief financial officer Ed Cepuran said he hopes the overhaul will catapult the company’s Auburn Fall Collector Weekend to “past glory at its peak and beyond.”

But he also recognized he faces the ongoing challenge of “dispelling some of the past history” surrounding the four-day auction, which was acquired last summer by Auctions America by RM after classic car auction pioneer Dean Kruse became embroiled in widespread claims of business malpractice.

Kruse and his company, Kruse International, were eventually stripped of their auctioneer’s licenses after more than 70 complaints were filed with the Indiana attorney general. That’s when RM Auctions purchased the 235-acre property from Kruse.

Cepuran said that prolonged fiasco left a sour taste in the public’s mouth and entangled the event’s legacy.

“The tougher aspect of it was just dealing with the negative connotations of acquiring it from its predecessor,” he added.

In the wake of the ownership change, Cepuran described his company as focusing on the publicity obstacles “you can control,” such as being receptive to the community’s pride in the auction park.

He recalled an Auburn resident who recently notified him the facility’s roadside American flag was appearing a little tattered. Remaining responsive to even minor details like that sends a strong message, Cepuran said.

“We wanted to have that appeal that we’re serious, we’re here,” he said. “We want the locals to know we’re in it” as a dedicated partner. And auction officials agreed this year’s proceedings will signal progress toward that sustained commitment: The multiday sale will feature 40 percent more cars than last year and double the swap meet participants.

Event organizers will also be reviving the auto experts panel it debuted at the spring auction. The seminar’s topic, hot rods and custom cars, will be discussed by five “mini-stars in that world,” Cepuran said.
