Derrick Brooks: I could have stayed at ESPN
Former Super Bowl champion Derrick Brooks says he discussed a new contract to stay with ESPN this season but turned it down to devote more time to business and charitable interests and his family.
Brooks and former Florida State teammate Warrick Dunn won't be returning as NFL analysts on ESPN2's First Take morning show this season, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz confirmed Wednesday.
On Thursday, Brooks said he's focusing on his new job as president of the AFL's Tampa Bay Storm, his charity work and spending more time with his family.
"They wanted me to come back but I couldn't with everything else going on. It was just difficult to do," Brooks said over the phone Thursday. Brooks added he continues to have an "excellent" relationship with the brass in Bristol.
The ex-Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers has also been in touch NFL Network and Versus about on-air roles. But he doesn't want to commit unless he's able to give it 100%.
"I don't want to start something with all this other stuff going on. My word is my word and I keep my word," Brooks said.
Jennifer Maxwell, executive director of the Warren Dunn Family Foundation, confirmed via email that Dunn's not returning to ESPN this season.
About Reid and TomReid Cherner and Tom Weir have been with USA TODAY since 1982 and they have written Game On! since March 2008.
Reid has covered everything from high schools to horse racing to the college and the pros. The only thing he likes more than his own voice is the sound of readers telling him when he's right and wrong.
Tom has covered every Summer and Winter Olympics since 1984, and has made numerous trips to the Super Bowl, World Series, Final Four and NBA Finals. In 2009, he put more miles on his bicycle than on his car.
About Mike and MikeMichael McCarthy and Michael Hiestand have more in common than their first names.
Both have covered sports media and marketing for USA TODAY. Both have tackled the sports biz ranging from what's behind mega-events such as the Olympics and Super Bowl to the sometimes-hidden numbers behind the sports world's bottom line.
But they usually come at things from different directions, and it's no wonder. Hiestand is an Oregon native who went to Stanford while McCarthy is a native New Yorker who went to St. John's.

Horse racing's Hall of Fame is across the street, for goodness' sake, so it had to be a big deal. And it's been so for a long time. The war between the states was raging when Saratoga opened in 1863, and the North deserved one hell of a track.
