FORT COLLINS, Colo. - There's a unique visitor at CSU practice this week. In his white golf shirt and shorts, glancing occasionally at his iPhone, he blends in well with the other donors, fans, former players and sportswriters just feet from the live action in front of him.
But among all the people that roam the CSU practice sidelines, he's in his own category.
Meet George Whitfield, a former Arena League quarterback who also played at Massilon (Ohio) High School, Youngstown State and Tiffin. And remember the name, because while the career of Pete Thomas is just beginning, if he ever makes a speech to accept any sort of award at any level, his long list of acknowledgements is sure to include Whitfield.
"He was all knees and elbows," Whitfield said, describing his first impressions of a 14-year-old Thomas when the two met in 2007. "He had huge hands and his Adam's apple bulged out, and his shoe size was about his age."
Thomas' dad, Dan, knew his son would soon fill out and had placed him in a small elite camp, before he entered eighth grade. But the camp had one major deficiency in the eyes of the fledgling quarterback: No quarterback coach.
Enter Whitfield, who had come to San Diego to serve as an assistant on Norv Turner's Chargers staff, working that season with Philip Rivers, the passer most compared to Thomas. Contacted by the Thomas family, Whitfield began tutoring the kid, launching what has blossomed into a special relationship.
And since launching that relationship with Thomas, as well as Tommy Wornham (now the starter at Princeton) and Matthew Mulvey (third-stringer at Notre Dame), Whitfield went on to work with Ben Roethlisberger during his 2010 suspension, helping the veteran stay sharp during an eventual Super Bowl season, and Cam Newton prior to the Panthers making the Heisman winner the No. 1 overall pick in April's NFL Draft.
"When Pete found out I was working with those name guys," Whitfield remembered, "he told me he thought I'd break out something special for them, something different than what I did for him. But he saw on TV it was the same ladder, the same drills."The ladder is a modest piece of equipment laid on the grass to teach quarterbacks proper footwork. It's also a proverbial term to describe Thomas' climb from JV passer at Valhalla High School to the nation's only college true freshman to start every game at quarterback in 2010.
