Functional Strength Exercises

The Function of Fitness

You exercise at the gym most days of the week, making sure to get the recommended two hours and 30 minutes a week of moderately intense physical activity. You even go for short walks on your lunch break. But when you bent over to pick up your baby, you threw your back out.

How could that happen when you are in such great shape?

You may not be paying enough attention to your functional fitness.

“Simply put, functional fitness is designed to make our lives more functional,” said Natalie Freund, a Canonsburg resident and personal trainer at Fitness Fanatics in Bridgeville. “Functional fitness uses exercises to mimic what people do in their everyday lives and builds strength in areas that people need to get through each day. For example, a new mom needs to squat down to pick up her baby, or someone else may need to just be able to squat down to get in their car and then push up to get out of the car.”

According to Freund, the goal of functional fitness is to improve the relationship between the nervous system and muscular system and get the body used to moving in different directions from what it is normally used to.

“When someone slips and falls on the ice, functional fitness exercises can help them build strength in areas of the body that were affected by the fall," she said. "Or, when a mother is constantly reaching back to her kids in a car from the front seat and her shoulder begins to ache as a result, we can use functional fitness exercises that will build strength in her shoulder.”

So, then, how does functional fitness differ from working out on the machines at the gym?

Freund explained that the machines at the gym, while great at isolating the muscles that are being used to perform the exercise, they are not functional fitness does.

“During functional fitness exercises, the brain is thinking in terms of continuous movement, not necessarily of isolating certain muscles,” she said.

According to Freund, varying your workout to include functional fitness is easy. For example, instead of doing leg extensions on the leg extension machine, do lunges. Or, instead of heading to the leg curl machine, try some squats.

In other words, instead of exercising on a machine, do something that involves continuous movement. BOSU balance trainers, medicine balls, and exercise balls also are good examples of functional fitness tools.
