Food And School Supply Drive To Be Held At Family Fun Night
A food and school supply drive will be held during the Avon recreation department's Family Fun Night Friday, Aug. 12.
Non-perishable food items and new school supplies will be collected for the Gifts of Love Back to School program. New backpacks, pencils, colored pencils, notebooks, three-ring binders, loose leaf paper, highlighters, erasers and folders are needed.

The “chicks” are at it again.
Avon residents Kim Krall, Sherry Lunt and Annmarie Nyikes, the Chicks Against Hunger, will host a food drive from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at The Retirement People office, 37271 Colorado Ave. in Avon.
The items collected during the event will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio, which serves Crawford, Erie, Huron and Lorain counties.
“This year we are going to have it where it’s going to be drive-thru style,” Krall said in an interview last week. “All they have to do is pull in. We will unload their cars for them to make it easy.”
While any nonperishable goods will be accepted as long as they are unopened and not expired, the items Krall said the food bank is most in need of are canned soup, tuna fish, peanut butter, cereal and vegetables.
“Last year we collected over a ton (of goods),” Krall said of the Chicks Against Hunger’s first food drive. “We are looking this year to collect 2 tons.”
Since Krall, Lunt and Nyikes joined forces last year to create the Chicks Against Hunger, Krall said the group has held a few food drives, one with Jazzercise in May, where more than 1,000 pounds of food were collected for the food bank. Another food drive was held at Avon’s Caribou Coffee last month, which resulted in 250 pounds of food collected for the less fortunate.
“We are going to be hosting another drive – a non-food drive – in October,” Krall said.
“It started when I was unemployed last summer and saw how easy it was with how the economy is that families can go hungry,” she said. “Families are struggling. I wanted to make a difference and met with Second Harvest. I couldn’t do it by myself, and they (Lunt and Nyikes) jumped right on board.”
The Chicks have also grown in number since last year, according to Krall.
“We now have a committee of about 10 of us,” she said. “Next time this year, we will be a nonprofit, hopefully.”
