Fort Hood bomb plot

A US Army private who ducked deployment to Afghanistan because he's a Muslim was arrested yesterday near Fort Hood, Texas -- where he allegedly plotted to bomb a restaurant filled with soldiers.

Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo, 21 confessed he chose the Texas military installation because it was the location of the 2009 shooting rampage by the jihadi-inspired Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan, which left 13 dead, authorities said.

"We would probably be here today giving you a different briefing had he not been stopped," said local Police Chief Dennis Baldwin. "Military personnel were a target."

Abdo, a soft-spoken Garland, Texas, native assigned to the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Ky., had officially been AWOL since July 4 -- about two weeks after being referred for court-martial for allegedly keeping 34 kiddie porn images on his government-issued laptop, authorities said.

He had been given conscientious-objector status based on his Islamic faith earlier this year, but his discharge was postponed after the child-porn charges were filed against him.

The soldier resurfaced this week in Killeen, Texas, when he visited Guns Galore -- the very same shop where Hasan purchased his arsenal two years ago -- and allegedly bought six pounds of smokeless gunpowder (a pipe-bomb ingredient), three boxes of shotgun shells and a magazine for a semiautomatic pistol.

Greg Ebert, a clerk at the store, said there was something not right about Abdo because he asked basic questions about the gunpowder, .40-caliber ammunition and "reloading options," then left in a waiting taxi.

"[We] felt uncomfortable with his overall demeanor and the fact he didn't know what the hell he was buying," Ebert said.

"I thought it prudent to contact the local authorities, which I did."

Abdo also had allegedly purchased a surplus Army uniform with Fort Hood patches.

Local cops picked him up during a traffic stop Wednesday. Cops said they found his hotel room stocked with the gunpowder, more ammo, at least one gun and jihadi literature.

Authorities believe that Abdo planned to set off two bombs at an off-base restaurant popular with soldiers, then start shooting them and first responders in the ensuing chaos.

He wanted to "get even," he told investigators, ABC News reported.

Abdo had made national headlines last year when he successfully fought deployment by claiming, "I do not believe Islam allows me to operate in any kind of war.
