Oregon, USC highlight upgraded hoops schedule
Fans spoke, and Nebraska's basketball administration listened.
But even before a survey of season ticket holders showed a desire for better nonconference men's opponents, Marc Boehm knew Nebraska's schedule in November and December needed to be upgraded.
The primary reason: To have a better chance for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, should Nebraska find itself on the bubble come March.
Boehm, the Nebraska associate athletic director who oversees basketball, said the omission of Colorado from last year's NCAA Tournament field was a wake-up call.
The Buffaloes went 21-13, were 8-8 in conference play and won two conference tournament games -- and went to the National Invitation Tournament.
The reason?
A poor nonconference schedule, according to the NCAA Tournament selection committee members that Boehm spoke to in the offseason.
"We knew that as a department and as a program we needed to upgrade the schedule," Boehm said. "You need to play a schedule that's very competitive. That means BCS schools, but that also means schools with good RPIs."
Nebraska's 11-game nonconference schedule this season -- shorted by three games because of an 18-game Big Ten Conference schedule -- includes six teams that won at least 18 games last season and four that went to the postseason.
No, you won't find Duke, North Carolina or Kentucky.
But you won't see Savannah State, Grambling State or Jackson State, either. Reducing the number of 300-plus RPI teams was a priority, Boehm said.
So was finding competitive regional teams, like South Dakota State, which returns three starters from last year's 19-win team that won at Iowa and lost by 12 points at Minnesota. The Jackrabbits play in Lincoln on Nov. 26.
Here's another improvement to the nonconference schedule -- true road games. Nebraska has three of them this season -- at USC, at Creighton and at TCU. That's three more than last season.
The highlight of the nonconference schedule, though, is the start of a home-and-home series with Oregon, led by Wilber native and former Creighton coach Dana Altman. The Ducks, who won last year's College Basketball Invitational and had an RPI of 135, return three starters and visit Lincoln on Dec. 23.
Other BCS opponents are USC and Wake Forest. Nebraska plays at USC in its second game of the season on Nov. 14, the start of a home-and-home series. The Trojans return two starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team that had an RPI of 67.

New Non Conference and the Meaning of the Additions - Husker Football
The Huskers fill in all the slots for the 2013 schedule with the addition of South Dakota State University on September 21, 2013. While not earth-shattering or particularly impressive, the two additions tell a bit about the direction the athletic department might be heading.
While the words cream puff or cupcake might pass through the disappointed fan's lips, games like these do serve a purpose. Not all teams are willing to come to Lincoln, NE on a fall Saturday for a song and a dance. To schedule a perceived weaker team with a payout that could bolster their athletic budget means that both departments are happy. With the possibility of one less non conference opponents in the future of the Big Ten, having an existing relationship with non-AQ and/or non-BCS teams means an agreement can be reached quicker.
In one of the quietest parts of the summer news cycle, this news released will cause little stir among fans and media. The 2012 and 2013 schedules already have Southern Miss and UCLA on the non-con to add to its strength. And the 2012 and 2014 schedules appear to be close to being filled. According to Jeff Jamrog, they will be available for a public announcement within the next two months (the assumption here being that the schools added should have a higher perceived impact to the strength of schedule).
The meat of the schedules is still in Big Ten conference play. Some may point to these agreements as proof that Nebraska believes that the conference schedule is about to get more difficult when the truth seems much different. Reviewing the non conference opponents for the last five or so years yields the simple fact that it has done little to prepare the Huskers for regular conference play. Scheduling only one BCS or AQ level opponent and three weaker has lead to disappointing results.
It seems that the number of stronger opponents has been upped to two, with two less so. This might be enough to be true prepared for Big Ten play. While having four challenging games before regular conference play would be exciting, it is not ideal and could lead to unnecessary wear and tear on the team.
