Remodel Planning for a Bath and Walk-in Closet « Orange County

Years ago I moved into what could be called a “homemade house.” It’s not a bad house, but it clearly suffers from the handiwork of individuals who didn’t concern themselves too much with planning. According to neighbors, everyone who previously owned the house had engaged in some sort of remodeling. As a result, it suffers from poor planning and that makes it somewhat inconvenient to use.

I’m big on planning, so I haven’t rushed into making changes. Nevertheless, I’ve lived long enough with a bit of inconvenience, so it’s time to make changes that will be lasting in nature. Many of the changes need to be sequenced with others, so the trick was to find which portion of the house I could start on without having to change many other parts of the house along with it. My conclusion was the master bedroom and bath.

The challenge here is an outdated bathroom adjoining a huge bedroom with a small corner closet. Clearly, during one of the previous remodeling efforts, the owner combined two smaller bedrooms and left one of the small bedroom closets in place. With the help of a friend who is an architect, we’ve drawn up plans for making changes, and it’s the planning for these changes that I’d like to highlight for you. Good planning is essential to envision the completed project before any work begins.

As shown in the sketch, the bath has everything lined up along one wall; a big clumsy tub, a sink and a toilet. The vanity is small and the mirrored cabinet provides little room for storage, and I’d like to get some linen storage in the bath because storage space elsewhere in the house is limited. There is a large window in the bathroom that looks directly at the roof line and there isn’t a way to vent odors and humidity. So, here’s the planned solutions to the problems:

Build a walk-in shower and mount it perpendicular to the length of the room at the far end.

Move the toilet next to the shower and create a privacy wall.

Update the vanity and mirrored cabinet, but leave them largely where they are.

Install new shallow cabinets behind the door, and a towel and linen storage cabinet in the corner where the toilet used to be.

This provides the home with a main shower, much needed storage in the bath, and gives a bit more room for everything. Now, the only other problem is the small closet at the far end of the bedroom.
