The standard GPS is boring.

Star Wars geeks may be able to tell the difference between an A-wing and a B-wing starfighter, have their boss’s ringtone set to The Imperial March, and even proudly use a picture of their Lego Millennium Falcon as their desktop wallpaper, but these die-hards probably shouldn’t be considered true Star Wars fans until they own the Yoda Premium GPS voice. Garmin has apparently become aware of reports regarding motorists swearing at the standard Garmin voice (the cool, unemotional woman with the slight British accent does come off as a bit of a know-it-all) and is providing alternative options for GPS users. LucasFilms, Locutio Voice Technologies, and Spot It Out (a Location Based Publisher) have come together to provide Garmin with Star Wars voices for their personal navigation devices.

Who could get irritated when Yoda is directing your navigation? With his calm demeanor and intimate understanding of the force, there is surely no one more qualified to get you where you need to go. “Right you should turn,” espouses a typical direction from the Jedia Master. “Then sharp left … control, control, if a Jedi, you wish to be.”

Those who wish to tap into their darker side might opt for the Darth Vader sound-alike, which includes a variety of catch phrases and sound effects, including Vader’s heavy helmet breathing, TIE fighters on the wing, and the whooshing of lightsabers. Darth Vader will ominously warn you about forthcoming traffic with sage quips such as “Traffic ahead. The Emperor has foreseen it.”

The Jedi washout turned Sith lord will never cease to remind you that he’s in control, appending “Proceed to the highlighted route” with “Your destiny lies with me. Obi-wan knew this to be true.” Actual directions are straight up and real time, of course, but phrases and quips are randomized for a slightly “real” feel to it all. The voice bundles also come with a 3D map icon to provide “an authentic Star Wars visual experience.
