Def Leppard Concert Review: Hysteria in Homdel NJ

By: Rob Cavuoto

On a rain drenched evening in New Jersey, Def Leppard and Heart played the PNC Arena in Homdell NJ. The concert was a rescheduled show from July due to the passing of singer, Joe Elliot’s father.

It may have poured this night but it didn’t slow the band down. They opened with “Undefeated,” a new studio tracks on their latest CD, Mirror Ball Live & More

From the out of the gate Joe’s voice sounded fantastic as he and the band tore through a greatest hits set list. I had the chance to speak with Vivian Campbell who told me, “In America people want to hear the hits so that’s what we give them.”

Def Leppard stuck a nice balance of songs from every area of the bands multi-platinum career like “Let’s Get Rocked,” “Foolin,” “Rocket” and “Animal,” and let’s not forget the crowd pleasers “Photograph” and the forever summer classic “Pour Some Sugar on Me.”

I asked Phil if playing “Pour Some Sugar On Me” for the millionth time ever get boring, he replied, “When everyone’s going bonkers and everyone’s singing along to it and you forget about that part of it. My daughter, who is six, just asked me, ‘When did this song come about?’ and I said ‘Well, 25 years ago.’

What’s really amazing is that it still has that same effect. It’s a lot of different things, but the fact that we put all that into it and were still doing it 25 years later and it still has the same effect is mind blowing. It doesn’t get old really. It does get old if you’re in rehearsal and there’s nobody in there. It’s like pulling teeth. But if you’ve got an audience that’s great, it’s amazing.”

Mid-set the band came out to perform two acoustic songs which provided a nice dynamic to the show from the runway extending into the orchestra, “Two Steps Behind” followed by a hybrid version of “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak,” which turns electric at the end.

The stage was the same from the last few tours and Vivian told me, “We’re doing a very different video thing this time around. We’re having multiple screens instead of one big one. We’re hanging seven screens at different depths on the stage. Plus we have a bunch of new video content that we try to refresh each year. We don’t recycle the MTV videos from the ’80s or things like that.

“Pour Some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard (1987) « Rock Around ...

Def Leppard formed in Sheffield England in 1977, and were part of the so-called New Wave of British Heavy Metal . Influenced by groups such as Queen as well as Black Sabbath, Def Leppard had a raw sound when their first album was issued in 1980.  But they did draw the attention of Back in Black producer Mutt Lange, who produced their much more polished second album High ‘n’ Dry was released. The band had a more polished image, especially after photogenic Phil Collen joined the group to replace the alcholic Pete Willis. At this point the band’s lineup was stable with Collen along with Phil Clark on lead guitars, Rick Savage on bass, Rick Allen on drums, and Joe Elliot on vocals.  The band’s new sound was even more polished, thanks to Lange’s production including programmed drums. Def Leppard was also much more photogenic than the typical Metal groups of the day (Quiet Riot, The Scorpions), leading to a number of popular music videos. Thanks to top hits such as “Foolin’”, “Rock of Ages”, “Photograph”, and “Too Late for Love”, Pyromania was a slow-building album. Initial sales were good but not great, but each successive single was more popular than the previous. “Women” (#80), then “Animal” (#19), then “Hysteria” (#10), and finally the monster single “ Pour Some Sugar On Me “, which went to #2 on the charts. This popular party anthem was a key milestone and crossover hit for the group, including some rap-like elements. The song’s seminal music video featured a slightly remixed version of the song tailor made for dance-floors, and the performance video made it seem like a Def Leppard concert was a big party!  The success of the single finally pushed Hysteria to number one in the late summer of 1988, where it would eventually sell over 12 million copies. The next single, “Love Bites” was then an even higher charting song, hitting #1. Incredibly, Leppard was able to get two more chart singles off the album, “Armageddon It” (#3), and “Rocket” (#12).

By 1989, the group was tired of touring and began to reconvene to record. Sadly, Steve Clark’s alcohol and drug abuse was growing worse and the group took several long breaks for him to get sober. Sadly, that day never came and he died in early 1991.
