Donna Decker wrote the poem "I Have Your Petty Secret" back in the 1980s, while still a creative writing student at the College of Staten Island. The piece is especially strong, almost acidic — it ends with the line "I served you well, dear; now I stand in a place you'll never touch. Let go of me." The narrator of the piece is telling a former love, in a word, to get a life. The poem is now the title track of a just-released CD that fuses spoken word with music. Decker and the musicians who helped her put tuneful flesh on the bones of her poems will celebrate the release of the CD — which was recorded at Lis and Lon Williamson's Gatorbone Studios in Keystone Heights — at two performances/parties this week. Decker read "Petty Secret" out loud to local musicians Frank Lindamood, Andy Moorer and Gabe Butterfield (son of late blues great Paul Butterfield) when they first got together last fall to put a few of her pieces to music. She'd assembled the players one by one after having seen them play with blues bands on stage at The Frog & the Hummingbird and Butterfield's Roadhouse, a funky emporium/performance space/blues museum in Sopchoppy. "They said, 'Wow, is that really how you hear it? Because the emotional tone of the words is a lot more assertive,' " she says. "Then Frank picked up his Gibson (guitar) and he started playing the (tune) that embodied the lyrics for him, and it was almost like a spiritual. Then he started singing it himself, in this big deep voice. And I was watching the poem evolve right there. It was like … boom! He nailed it." The piece is one of eight set to music by the new band.

All of the poems, written with the spare narrative grace that is a hallmark of his style, possess as much personal warmth as ever. Many are flecked with reminders of the sardonic temperament that has also characterized his writing from the beginning.

Why Love Poems?
If you look on Amazon nowadays for romantic poetry, we’re sorry to say that most of what you will spot are anthologies of other people’s poems, and many of these contain what are usually referred to as “the classics”, which is commonly another way of saying that they’re very old.
What you won’t find easy to lay your hands on are collections of original, fresh, modern love poetry.
In our opinion, that’s sad, since the issues raised in romantic poems from centuries ago are no doubt irrelevant to lovers nowadays.
Exactly what do we mean by this?
While it’s correct that romance and love are eternal, in a great number of households these days, both partners have to go out to work, just to pay the bills, never mind afford the occasional extravagance.
Modern life is frenetic, resulting in people not having enough time to really develop their relationships and keep them healthy – in many cases, partners hardly even see each other at all other than at weekends.
And the number of divorces resulting from this marital muddle are truly shocking.
However, it’s our opinion that love poems can help in all sorts of ways.
Let’s start when the fire of love is first ignited, for example.
In our case, we met online because we lived on separate continents. And while we spent up to twelve hours each day talking via email, IM and Internet telephony (e.g. Skype), we desired something to help intensify the bond that was fast developing.
So, each day, attached to a long ecard that described how we each felt and what we’d been up to, a romantic poem was included.
Now, these romantic poems were not copied from some other poetry collection, but were hand-crafted, but don’t worry if you don’t feel up to writing your own love poems – as long as the poem conveys the right sentiments, it will still achieve your objectives.
You see, the most important consideration is that the verse must be heart-felt and sincere, and not something you stole from inside a schmaltzy greetings card.
As a man, you might feel that love poetry is just too sissy, but you’d be utterly erroneous!
