South Australian Artist Dickie Minyintiri Wins National Telstra Art Award
The Telstra General Painting Award was awarded to Bobby West Tjupurrula from Kiwirrkura in Western Australia for his untitled work that depicts designs associated with the significant rockhole site of Tarkul, north of Mt Webb in Western Australia. This is the site where large groups of Tingari men came in ancestral times to be burnt in a large fire. The Telstra Works on Paper was awarded to Dennis Nona from Torres Strait for his work Zuga Zug. Widely acknowledged as one of the most important Torres Strait Islander artists, Dennis has won the Telstra Works on Paper category for the second year running and was awarded the overall Telstra Art Award in 2007. His winning work on paper, Zuga Zug reflects an important story from Dennis’ homeland, etched in his unique style. The Wandjuk Marika Memorial Three-Dimensional Award, sponsored by Telstra, was awarded to 69-year old Gali Yalkarriwuy Gurruwiwi from Elcho Island in Eastern Arnhem Land, for his work Banumbirr (Morning Star poles). Gali has used different elements of natural pigments, feathers, wood and string to create the Morning Star poles, which is sacred to the Dhuwa clans of the Yolngu people.Australian Aboriginal History - News

The West Indies tour coincided with America's civil rights movement, Australia's re-evaluation of apartheid South Africa; its Aboriginal people and White Australia. India's first Australian tour followed republican independence from Britain,

The plan has the support of all parties and independents but panel member and former Aboriginal Affairs Minister Fred Chaney says making the change won't be easy. Only eight of 44 referendums have ever succeeded in changing the Australian constitution.
Australian Aborigines
The history of Indigenous Australians is thought to have spanned 40 000 to 45 000 years, although some estimates have put the figure at up to 70 000 years before European settlement. For most of this time, the Indigenous Australians lived as nomads and as hunter-gatherers with a strong dependence on the land and their agriculture for survival. The path of Australian Aboriginal history changed radically after the 18th- and 19th-century settlement of the British: Indigenous people were displaced from their ways of life, were forced to submit to European rule, and were later encouraged to assimilate into Western culture. Since the 1960s, reconciliation has been the pursuit of European Australian – Indigenous Australian relations”.
